TEDxColombo App Terms of Use

Welcome to the TEDxColombo mobile application.

These Terms of Use govern your access to and use of the TEDxColombo App, including its event information, speaker profiles, schedules, announcements, featured talks, links, notifications, and other content.

By downloading, accessing, registering for, or using the app, you agree to these Terms of Use and the TEDxColombo App Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with these terms, please do not use the app.

TEDxColombo is an independently organised TEDx event operated under licence from TED. The TEDxColombo App is managed by the local TEDxColombo organising team and is not operated by TED Conferences, LLC.

1. Purpose of the App

The TEDxColombo App is designed to provide users with information and services connected to TEDxColombo, including:

  • Information about TEDxColombo events
  • Event programmes and schedules
  • Speaker and performer information
  • Featured TEDxColombo talks
  • Event announcements and reminders
  • Registration and participation information
  • Links to videos and relevant third-party services
  • Other TEDxColombo-related content

Features may be added, removed, updated, or changed at any time.

2. Acceptance of These Terms

By using the app, you confirm that:

  • You have read and understood these Terms of Use
  • You agree to comply with these Terms of Use
  • The information you provide through the app is accurate
  • You will use the app only for lawful purposes

If you use the app on behalf of an organisation, you confirm that you have the authority to accept these terms on behalf of that organisation.

3. Eligibility and Use by Children

The app is intended for a general audience.

If you are under the age at which you can legally provide consent to the collection of personal information, you should use the app and provide personal information only with the involvement and consent of a parent or legal guardian.

Parents and legal guardians are responsible for supervising a child’s use of the app.

TEDxColombo may remove information submitted by a child where appropriate consent has not been provided.

4. Registration Information

The app may require you to provide certain information, including:

  • Your name
  • Your telephone number
  • Your email address

You agree to provide complete, accurate, and current information.

You must not:

  • Register using another person’s identity or contact information
  • Provide false or misleading information
  • Use another person’s registration without permission
  • Submit information for unlawful, fraudulent, or abusive purposes

TEDxColombo may restrict or discontinue your access if the information provided is false, misleading, incomplete, or used in violation of these terms.

The collection and use of your personal information are explained in the TEDxColombo App Privacy Policy.

5. Acceptable Use

You may use the app only for lawful, personal, and non-commercial purposes.

When using the app, you must not:

  • Violate any applicable law or regulation
  • Attempt to gain unauthorised access to the app, its servers, databases, or systems
  • Interfere with the operation, security, or availability of the app
  • Introduce viruses, malicious code, or other harmful material
  • Attempt to bypass security or access restrictions
  • Reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, or attempt to derive the source code of the app, except to the extent that such restriction is prohibited by applicable law
  • Copy, reproduce, modify, or distribute app content without permission
  • Use automated systems, bots, crawlers, or scraping tools to access or extract content or data
  • Collect or attempt to collect personal information about other users
  • Impersonate TEDxColombo, TED, a speaker, an organiser, or another person
  • Use the app in a manner that is fraudulent, abusive, defamatory, threatening, or harmful
  • Misrepresent an association with or endorsement by TEDxColombo or TED
  • Use TED, TEDx, TEDxColombo, or related names and branding without authorisation
  • Use content from the app to develop, train, evaluate, or operate an artificial intelligence or machine-learning system without the necessary written permission

We may restrict, suspend, or terminate access where we reasonably believe that the app is being misused or these terms have been violated.

6. Event Information

We make reasonable efforts to ensure that event information provided through the app is accurate and current. However:

  • Event dates, times, venues, speakers, performers, sessions, and schedules may change
  • Sessions or activities may be postponed or cancelled
  • Speakers or programme items may be added, replaced, or removed
  • Information may be updated without prior notice

Users are responsible for checking the latest information available through the app or official TEDxColombo communication channels.

Information displayed in the app does not, by itself, guarantee entry to an event, access to a session, seat availability, or participation in an activity.

7. Event Registration and Tickets

The app may provide information or links relating to TEDxColombo event registration and ticketing.

Registrations and ticket purchases may be processed through third-party platforms. Additional terms, refund policies, admission conditions, and privacy policies may apply to those services.

TEDxColombo is not responsible for the operation, security, availability, or payment-processing practices of an independent third-party platform.

Possession of the app or registration through the app does not guarantee admission unless a valid ticket, invitation, confirmation, or other required authorisation has been issued.

Event admission may also be subject to separate attendee terms, venue rules, safety requirements, and codes of conduct.

8. Intellectual Property

The app and its original design, graphics, text, layouts, software, event materials, photographs, and other content may be owned by or licensed to TEDxColombo, TED, speakers, photographers, production partners, or other third-party rights holders.

All applicable copyrights, trademarks, and other intellectual-property rights are reserved.

Subject to these terms, TEDxColombo grants you a limited, personal, revocable, non-exclusive, and non-transferable right to access and use the app for lawful, non-commercial purposes.

This permission does not give you the right to:

  • Copy or republish app content
  • Modify or create derivative works from app content
  • Sell, license, or commercially exploit app content
  • Remove copyright, trademark, attribution, or ownership notices
  • Reproduce speaker photographs, biographies, presentations, or recordings without permission
  • Use app content in advertising, marketing, merchandise, or commercial materials
  • Suggest that TEDxColombo, TED, or a speaker endorses a person, product, service, organisation, or cause

No ownership rights are transferred to you through your use of the app.

9. TED, TEDx, and TEDxColombo Marks

TED, TEDx, “Ideas Change Everything,” and associated names, logos, designs, and brand elements are trademarks or other protected intellectual property belonging to TED Conferences, LLC or its licensors.

TEDxColombo operates under a TEDx licence. Permission to access the app does not grant permission to use any TED, TEDx, or TEDxColombo name, logo, trademark, design, or brand element.

These marks may not be reproduced, altered, distributed, displayed, or used without the appropriate prior written authorisation.

Use of TED and TEDx content may also be subject to TED’s separate usage policies and licensing requirements.

10. Featured Talks and Video Content

The app may display, embed, or link to TEDxColombo talks and other video content hosted on platforms such as YouTube or TED.com.

Talks and related materials are provided for personal viewing and educational engagement. Unless expressly permitted by the relevant rights holder or applicable licence, you must not:

  • Download or record a talk
  • Reproduce or republish a talk
  • Edit, remix, translate, or create a derivative version
  • Redistribute a talk on another platform
  • Use a talk for commercial, promotional, or advertising purposes
  • Remove speaker, event, copyright, or attribution information
  • Use a talk in an artificial-intelligence dataset or machine-learning system
  • Scrape, harvest, or automatically extract transcripts, video, audio, or metadata

The availability of content in the app does not mean that the content is free from copyright or available for unrestricted use.

TED and TEDx content may be subject to TED’s applicable usage policies, Creative Commons licence terms, YouTube’s Terms of Service, or other third-party conditions.

11. Third-Party Services and Links

The app may contain links to or content from third-party services, including:

  • YouTube
  • TED.com
  • Social media platforms
  • Event registration or ticketing platforms
  • Maps and navigation services
  • External websites

TEDxColombo does not control and is not responsible for the content, security, availability, accuracy, or privacy practices of third-party services.

When you access a third-party platform, its own terms of use and privacy policy will apply. The inclusion of a link does not necessarily mean that TEDxColombo endorses the third party or all content available through that service.

You access third-party services at your own discretion.

Depending on where you downloaded the app, the terms of the relevant app store or platform provider may also apply to your download and use of the app. Nothing in these Terms is intended to override any mandatory platform terms that apply to you.

12. User Communications and Submissions

You may be able to submit enquiries, feedback, survey responses, registration information, or other communications through the app.

You remain responsible for the information and material you submit.

You must not submit material that:

  • Is unlawful, fraudulent, abusive, threatening, or defamatory
  • Violates another person’s privacy
  • Infringes copyright, trademark, or other intellectual-property rights
  • Contains malicious software or harmful code
  • Misrepresents your identity or relationship with another person or organisation
  • Is unrelated to the purpose for which the form or communication channel is provided

You permit TEDxColombo to use your submission to respond to you, administer the relevant event or service, improve the app, and fulfil the purpose for which it was submitted.

Your personal information will be handled in accordance with the TEDxColombo App Privacy Policy.

13. Notifications and Communications

If you enable notifications or provide your contact information, TEDxColombo may send you:

  • Registration confirmations
  • Event reminders
  • Programme and schedule updates
  • Venue or access information
  • Speaker and talk announcements
  • Important administrative messages
  • Other TEDxColombo-related communications you have requested or agreed to receive

You can disable push notifications through your device settings.

You may unsubscribe from optional promotional communications using the unsubscribe option provided or by contacting TEDxColombo.

Disabling optional communications may not prevent us from sending essential administrative messages connected to a registration or service you requested.

14. Privacy

Your privacy is important to us.

Our collection, use, storage, retention, and sharing of personal information are governed by the TEDxColombo App Privacy Policy.

By using the app and providing personal information, you acknowledge that you have reviewed the Privacy Policy.

If the app provides a user-account feature, requests to delete an account and associated personal information will be handled as described in the Privacy Policy and through any deletion controls made available in the app.

15. App Availability and Updates

We aim to keep the app available and functioning properly. However, we do not guarantee that the app will always be:

  • Available without interruption
  • Free from errors or technical problems
  • Compatible with every device or operating system
  • Free from viruses or other harmful components
  • Updated immediately when event information changes

We may update, modify, suspend, or discontinue all or part of the app at any time.

You may need to install updates to continue using certain features. TEDxColombo is not responsible for problems caused by outdated software, unsupported devices, network failures, or third-party services.

16. No Warranties

To the extent permitted by applicable law, the app and its content are provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis.

TEDxColombo does not guarantee that:

  • All information will be accurate, complete, or current
  • The app will operate without interruption or error
  • Every link or third-party service will remain available
  • Content will be suitable for a particular purpose
  • Ideas or opinions presented in talks will produce any particular result

Views and opinions expressed by speakers belong to the respective speakers. They do not necessarily represent the views of TEDxColombo, its organisers, partners, volunteers, sponsors, or TED.

Users should apply their own judgement when relying on information or ideas presented through the app.

Nothing in the app should be treated as professional medical, legal, financial, or other specialist advice.

17. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, TEDxColombo, its organisers, team members, volunteers, partners, sponsors, service providers, and licensors will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive loss arising from:

  • Your use of or inability to use the app
  • Reliance on information provided through the app
  • Changes to an event, speaker, schedule, venue, or programme
  • The conduct or content of a third-party service
  • Loss of data or interruption of service
  • Unauthorised access to information despite reasonable security measures
  • Content or views expressed by a speaker
  • A device, network, software, or compatibility problem

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited.

18. Responsibility for Violations

To the extent permitted by applicable law, you are responsible for losses, claims, or expenses arising from:

  • Your unlawful or unauthorised use of the app
  • Your violation of these Terms of Use
  • Your infringement of another person’s intellectual-property, privacy, or other legal rights
  • Material you submit through the app
  • Your attempt to interfere with the app’s security or operation

19. Suspension and Termination

TEDxColombo may restrict, suspend, or terminate your access to the app if:

  • You violate these Terms of Use
  • You use the app for unlawful, fraudulent, or abusive purposes
  • Your conduct creates a security, legal, or operational risk
  • Suspension is required by law or a competent authority
  • The app or relevant service is discontinued

You may stop using the app and uninstall it at any time.

Termination does not affect provisions that are intended to continue after termination, including intellectual-property, liability, and governing-law provisions.

20. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms of Use when:

  • App features or services change
  • Event operations change
  • Legal or regulatory requirements change
  • Security or technical practices are updated

The latest version will be made available through the app or the official TEDxColombo website. The “Last updated” date will show when the terms were most recently revised.

Your continued use of the app after updated terms become effective constitutes acceptance of the revised terms, to the extent permitted by law.

If you do not agree with an updated version, you should stop using the app.

21. Governing Law and Jurisdiction

These Terms of Use are governed by the laws of Sri Lanka.

Subject to any mandatory legal rights or procedures that apply, disputes relating to the app or these terms will be subject to the jurisdiction of the courts of Sri Lanka.

Before beginning formal proceedings, you and TEDxColombo are encouraged to attempt to resolve the matter in good faith by contacting the other party.

22. Severability

If any part of these Terms of Use is found to be invalid, unlawful, or unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue to apply.

The affected provision will be interpreted or adjusted only to the extent necessary to make it valid and enforceable.

23. Entire Agreement

These Terms of Use, together with the TEDxColombo App Privacy Policy and any additional terms presented for a specific event or service, form the agreement governing your use of the app.

If separate event, ticketing, venue, or participation conditions apply, those conditions will also govern the relevant activity.

The TEDxColombo App is managed by the local TEDxColombo organising team. It is not operated by TED Conferences, LLC, and nothing in the app should be interpreted as creating an employment, agency, partnership, or joint-venture relationship between TEDxColombo and TED Conferences, LLC beyond the applicable TEDx licence.
